Pakistan re-elected to ECOSOC; Haroon calls it ‘fabulous victory’

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 26 (APP): Pakistan was re-elected Monday to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the economic arm of the UN, for the third consecutive year, with Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon calling it a “fabulous victory”. “It’s a fabulous victory for Pakistan. It reflects the prestige Pakistan enjoys in the international community,” the top Pakistani diplomat told APP after Pakistan polled 149 votes in balloting at the 192-member General Assembly.
Pakistan has role in Afghan resolution : US

WASHINGTON, Oct 25 (APP): Pakistan has a role to play in Afghan reconciliation process and a political element is important to resolving the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan, according to a senior United States envoy.
Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke rejected the assertion that Pakistan army is opposed to Afghan reconciliation.

Saudi envoy calls on Rehman Malik
ISLAMABAD, Oct 25 (APP): Ambassador of Saudi Arabia Abdul Aziz bin Ibrahim Al-Ghadeer Monday called on Minister for Interior A. Rehman Malik and discussed the bilateral relations between both the brotherly nations.Both the dignitaries also deliberated upon the assistance and rehabilitation of the flood affected people.Malik said Pakistan highly valued its relations with Saudi Arabia and the valuable contributions made by Khadim-ul-Harmain Sharifain King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz and Saudi Interior Minister Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz for Pakistani flood victims.
He said President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani also were indebted to the extraordinary assistance to the flood victims.
The Saudi envoy said Saudi government and its people stand by their Pakistani brethren and they were donating for them wholeheartedly in this critical situation.
He said Saudi Arabia wishes that the friendship between the two brotherly countries may get more firm.
